About Gaomei Wetlands Conservation Area

Gaomei Wetlands Conservation Area is located along the coast of Taichung City, Taiwan, where the Dadu River meets the Taiwan Strait. The wetlands span approximately 300 hectares of mudflats, tidal pools, and reed beds, creating a unique ecosystem that supports over 200 species of birds, including the rare black-faced spoonbill and various migratory shorebirds. The area is recognized as an important habitat for both resident and transient wildlife, especially during the migratory seasons in spring and autumn. Historically, the wetland was a tidal plain used for fisheries and salt production but has since been designated a conservation area to preserve its ecological value amid rapid coastal development. Visitors come to Gaomei primarily for birdwatching, nature walks along its boardwalks, and spectacular sunsets over the vast open mudflats, where wind turbines add a striking man-made backdrop. The conservation area features a long wooden boardwalk trail stretching over 1,500 meters, allowing close but environmentally sensitive access to the wetland’s natural beauty. Educational signage and observation platforms provide interpretive information about local flora and fauna. The area is a favorite for photographers, especially at dusk, and offers family-friendly outdoor experiences. Its relative proximity to urban areas makes it a popular day trip destination. Conservation efforts here include habitat restoration and community engagement to balance environmental protection with visitor access, helping maintain Gaomei’s status as one of Taiwan’s premier wetland parks.
